Sulfur hexafluoride gas is widely used in high-voltage electrical appliances due to its excellent insulation and arc extinguishing properties. 50% of the globally produced sulfur hexafluoride gas is used in the power industry, of which 80% is used in high-voltage switchgear. More than 90% of the fully sealed ring main units operated domestically rely on sulfur hexafluoride gas as the insulation medium.
However, this gas inevitably leaks and emits during inflation, operation, and recovery, and is an important source of pollution in the atmospheric environment, seriously damaging the human living environment. The Kyoto Protocol explicitly defines SF6 gas as one of the six greenhouse gases.
SF6 gas has been included in the list of hazardous waste in the National Hazardous Waste List issued and implemented in China in 1998.
The global warming coefficient of SF6 gas molecules is 24000 to 26000 times that of CO2 gas molecules. According to statistics, the annual consumption of SF6 gas in the power distribution system exceeds 4500 tons, equivalent to 120 million tons of CO ₂ gas emissions.
